Cholera is an acute diarrheal infection prevalent in countries where there is limited access to clean water and sanitation. Symptoms are acute diarrhea and vomiting with risk of dehydration.

The DTP is a highly effective combined vaccine which prevents infection from diphtheria, tetanus and polio. It is usually administered during childhood, and booster vaccinations may be advisable after 10 years when travelling to certain countries which are identified as high risk for infections.

This vaccination prevents viral infection of the liver by Hepatitis A contracted from unhygienic food or water. Symptoms include fever, digestive issues and can lead to liver failure in worst cases. Most infections occur in countries with poor sanitation and travellers to these countries are advised to check if they should book an inoculation prior to travel.

It is estimated that by the age of 27 most sexually active people have been exposed to some strain of HPV, usually without their knowledge.
Some strains of HPV can cause genital warts while others can lead to cancer.

Guidance from the NHS has recently changed, so if you are starting a new course of vaccinations you will require only two doses.

Adults require two doses the second being administered 28 days after the first dose; protection is seven days after the second dose, so inoculation should be given at least five weeks prior to travel. Protection lasts for twelve months, after which time a booster may be given to provide an additional twelve months protection.

Whilst in areas of risk you are advised to protect yourself against mosquito bites.
When travelling to countries where malaria is prevalent it is highly recommended to seek advice and preventative medication.
Spread by mosquito bites, malaria is a potentially life threatening disease but risks of infection are greatly reduced if anti malaria medication is taken according to instructions and also if additional precautions are taken to avoid being bitten.

There are different anti malaria drugs with varying side effects. Your physician will advise which is best for you depending on what you are planning to do, where you are going and your own health issues.

Wear clothing to cover as much skin as possible – long sleeves, long trousers – especially after dusk. Use insect repellent on skin and clothing, insect repelling room spray, mosquito nets over beds.
There are 12 strains of this meningococcal disease, which is easily treated by antibiotics but is often hard to diagnose as not all symptoms are apparent. The disease is transmitted via nasal and throat droplets, so usually via kissing, sneezing or coughing and attacks the tissue surrounding the spinal cord and brain.
The vaccine protects against all strains of this life threatening virus except for Meningitis B. If left untreated the virus, in some cases, can lead to meningitis, septicaemia, disability or death.
Recommended for those travelling to certain parts of Africa and Saudi Arabia as well as for students prior to attending college.
At least two weeks prior to travel to areas which are at high risk.
The single dose vaccine is given by injection. This vaccine does not protect against the Meningitis B strain of the disease.

Measles is a highly contagious viral infection for which there is no treatment and which can, in some cases with complications, be fatal. Mumps is also highly contagious and can lead to more serious complications when contracted in adulthood. Rubella is also a highly contagious viral infection which, whilst generally mild, can be very harmful to the unborn child of pregnant women.
The vaccine is administered in two doses, the second of which must be given four weeks after the initial dose; protection is then after two more weeks, so six weeks should be allowed for vaccination prior to travel.

Avoid any contact with animals, particularly dogs, while abroad. If you are bitten, scratched or are licked on an open cut or skin abrasion by any animal, wash the wound and seek medical attention immediately.
Flu is a highly infectious illness which can be severe for some adults, even when healthy to begin with. Infection can last up to two weeks and is easily transmitted via sneezing, coughing and even hand contact. Â

The seasonal flu vaccination service operates from September to March. Availability will depend on season.

Possible mild symptoms include tiredness, fever, muscle aches, headache and joint pain plus soreness at the injection site.
Transmission is through the bite of an infected tick, most likely to occur during the spring and summer months when skin is exposed in rural areas. Endemic throughout many European countries, it is recommended for those planning on spending a lot of time outdoors particularly in areas with high cases of infected ticks. The disease can cause health complications including inflammation of the brain.

Adults require three doses, with protection against the disease only after the second dose is completed. The first dose should be given at least two months prior to travel, the second being administered one to three months after the first, and the final dose between five and twelve months later. Protection lasts for three years, after which boosters are available at three yearly intervals.
